Michael Collins' M6 Toll Motorway No. 2 2003

A new exhibition has opened at Beam Gallery with a new take on regeneration, renaissance and development.

‘Record Pictures’ is a body of work by renowned photographer Michael Collins of incomplete structures or suspended building work from across the country, including views of the newly opened St Pancras Station in London.

Collin’s pictures offer a new perspective for regeneration: rather than focusing on the final result he records a moment in the history of its creation. His approach takes inspiration from the photographers of the past.

The practice of taking ‘record pictures’ originated in the mid–19th century when civil engineers applied the new invention of photography through highly detailed visual records of their industry.

Collins has applied these traditional principles to the building sites of the 21st century to create a series of striking and powerful photographic statements.

To complement Collins’ pictures, historic record pictures of Wakefield from the Wakefield Cultural Services, Wakefield Museums and Arts collection will be also exhibited.
