Tony Armstrong is excited about his new role
Living Streets has a new chief executive. Tony Armstrong joins the charity from the Department of Health, where he has been leading the Cross Government Obesity Programme.
Tony takes over from Tom Franklin who joined the Ramblers Association in September 2007.
Tony has a background in neighbourhood regeneration and renewal and health improvement, and has held a number of senior policy adviser roles in government.
He was a founder member of the government’s Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, where he was responsible for national work on neighbourhood management and health inequalities.
Tony also worked in a local New Deal for Communities partnership in East Brighton, where he worked with residents and local agencies to improve local services.
Tony says: “I’m very excited to take on this new role. Living Streets is a fantastic organisation, and has an agenda which focuses on improving people’s everyday quality of life. We have a positive vision of bringing life back to our streets, with high quality public space and more people walking.
“Whichever way you look, the evidence is piling up to show that we can’t carry on the way we are. Living Streets' vision of neighbourhoods where people come first has an impact on a whole range of issues: rising congestion levels, a lack of connection with our neighbourhoods, increasing rates of child obesity, the demise of local high streets and reducing the threat of climate change.
“Increasing walking levels, and building our neighbourhoods to make that a safe and attractive choice, is vital in improving our lives and tackling these issues.”
