More than 100 spaces and buildings have been unveiled as winners of the Civic Trust Awards. Restoration presenter and comedian Griff Rhys Jones presented awards at Arsenal FC's Emirates Stadium in North London on 18 March.
Close to the heart of Rhys Jones would have been the announcement of Drift Park, Rhyl, in his native Wales, as the winner of the Hard Landscaping Award (sponsored by Charcon).
Drift park features a water play area (with ‘shower heads’ designed by local schoolchildren providing water jets), a mini-golf attraction and an outdoor theatre, children’s playground and natural garden. At night the area is lit to provide a sculpted artwork feature. The roof of the public toilet building has been planted as a green roof.
The park is situated on the new, west promenade development and has been described as ‘a green haven of plants where it was once plain concrete’.
Other award winners include New Road in Brighton which won the ‘Streets Award’ (sponsored by CABE Space) and the new Arena and Convention Centre in Liverpool won the NightVision Award. The latter award recognises a project that improves the ‘evening economy’ and makes a major contribution to an area at night.
