Hope springs eternal

The Fountain Society actively pursue the creation and conservation of fountains

The Fountain Society are spearheading an Open Design Competition to create a new fountain for the 2012 Olympic Games to celebrate all of the Briish gold medal Olympians and Paralympians.

To date, 705 British athletes have won gold medals and their names will be entered onto a roll of honour incorporated into the fountain. Every four years, the names of new British Olympians and Paralympians will be added.

The fountain, which will be sited at Marble Arch, will be illuminated at night, to give 24 hour pleasure to all those passing by. It will also re-cycle its water and include three drinking fountains as part of the design, to encourage the use of piped
water rather than plastic bottles.

Fountain design is not a mainstream activity in the UK, and the society wants to encourage many more people to consider fountains, cascades and water features as part of their training in environmental design, town planning, architectural, the built environment, and other disciplines designed to enhance the environment.

There will be prizes of £250, plus a year’s free membership of the Fountain Society for the three best entries in each of these categories:

  • Designs submitted by those up to 19
  • Designs submitted by students and others aged between 19 and 28
  • Designs from professional or amateur entrants over 28.

From these nine prize winners, two designers will be invited to enter an international, fully funded, design competition.

Entries close on 31 December 2008 and full entry details can be found on the website.
