Rewarding regeneration excellence

BURA has launched its Awards for Best Practice in Regeneration 2008.

The awards, established in 1992, aim to define excellence in regeneration. For the third year running, key government organisations in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, are supporting the awards to encourage a greater number, quality and diversity of entries.

The 2008 Awards for Best Practice in Regeneration are being sponsored by English Partnerships, Scottish Enterprise, The Welsh Assembly Government Department for the Economy and Transport and Department for Social Development Northern Ireland.

Dr Gareth Potts, BURA’s director of research, policy and best practice, said: “The awards show the commitment of BURA and its sponsors to identifying cutting-edge activity in regeneration.

"This year the entry forms have been revised with a view to making it easier for BURA researchers to write reports on the short-listed entries. This effort to better capture and collate information on best practice is part of wider BURA efforts to expand the Best Practice programme – through disseminating reports on best practice and through networking and supporting winners.”

The award criterion are based on:

Proven Track Record of Success The majority of the project should be complete and occupied, any facilities should be in good use and significant improvements to the area should be evident.

Economic Contribution/Catalytic Regenerative Effects Projects should show they make a positive economic contribution to the area, provide a catalyst for further regeneration and create opportunities for jobs, training and education.

Social and Community Dimension Projects should secure benefits that respond to local needs, attempt to involve the local community through engagement and empowerment or enhance social and community cohesion.

Environmental Dimension Projects may demonstrate environmentally considerate design and construction, use environmental management systems or encourage community engagement with environmental issues. The Panel is also interested to read how plans have been adapted to reflect new technologies and environmental initiatives.

Management/Financial Aspects The panel seeks projects that have been run effectively and with a long-term view. They will consider aspects such as management structure, funding, development plans, monitoring procedures and partnership working.

Demonstrate ‘Best’ Rather than ‘Good’ or ‘Average’ Practice Winning projects and schemes should be innovative in some/all of the above dimensions, provide learning points and have features worthy of replication across the regeneration sector.

The deadline for entries is 6 June 2008.
