The Tees Barrage creates a setting for regeneration projects
EDAW's Manchester office has been appointed by the Stockton and Middlesbrough Initiative (SMI) to prepare a development framework for the Tees marshalling yards.
EDAW has been commissioned to investigate the site, address its infra-
structure requirements and produce a development framework.
This will be backed up with technical assessment which will create a residential community embracing design and sustainability in a way which will make it a national exemplar.
The Stockton Middlesbrough Initiative (SMI) was established by
Stockton and Middlesbrough Councils. It is a 20-year vision for regenerating the urban core of the Tees Valley.
The scheme will reclaim redundant and underutilised stretches of land alongside the River Tees through the introduction of a new residential community of up to 10,000 people.
Sustainability is at the heart of the programme, and will include the improvement and protection of three important existing wildlife habitats, alongside the key component of accessibility, with the creation of safe environments for pedestrians and cyclists along the river corridor.
The site comprises approximately 53 hectares of land lying south of the River Tees, north of the A66 and crossed by the elevated A19 viaduct. The site is currently an underused railway marshalling yard and traction maintenance depot.
To the north of the site is the Tees Barrage which impounds water upstream and creates a setting for regeneration projects at North Shore, Teesdale and in Stockton centre itself.
Associated with the barrage is a white water canoe course which is currently tidally driven but where there are proposals, now well advanced, to install a sustainable pumped system.
This will make the course a major national and international recreational asset, and place it within the top five in Europe.
The clients for this work are English, Welsh and Scottish Railway, Network Rail, the Stockton Middlesbrough Initiative and the Council’s of Stockton on Tees and Middlesbrough.
